Ultra Low Emissions Zone

The Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) came into force on April 8th 2019 in Central London.

Most vehicles are targeted and, if they don’t meet the new exhaust emission standards, they pay an extra fee. (the ULEZ standard).

The Central London area is due to be increased in October 2021 to include the North and South Circular.

ULEZ operates 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Vehicles which access the zone and fail to meet the standards pay a fee £12.50 for most vehicles including cars, motorcycles and vans under 3.5 tonnes.

For heavier vehicles including lorries over 3.5 tonnes, trucks, coaches, buses over 5 tonnes the charge is £100 per day.

Failure to pay incurs a PCN charge. The system is operated by London’s network of ANPR cameras.

The ULEZ is in addition to the congestion charge and low emission zone (LEZ) charges in place but will replace the T-Charge.

Does your vehicle meet the required standards?

Check your V5, under section D this should show your euro emission standard:

  • Euro III, is all new registrations after January 1st 2001
  • Euro IV, is all new registrations after January 1st 2006
  • Euro VI, is all new registrations after September 1st 2015

Euro 6 became mandatory from January 2014 for all new heavy-duty goods vehicles and buses, September 2015 for cars and light vans, September 2016 for large vans up to 3.5 tonnes.

More UK cities are likely to follow; Birmingham, Leeds, Derby, Southampton and Nottingham are also running consultations on their own planned future charges.
